Do you have an interest in children’s oral health issues? We need to identify a Chapter Oral Health Advocate (COHA) from Indiana. A training session is coming up November 5-6, 2010, in Elk Grove Village, IL, and if you attend, the AAP Oral Health Initiative - through a grant from the American Dental Association Foundation - we will cover all of your expenses. This will be the last training offered in this grant cycle, and we don’t want Indiana to miss out!
The COHA position description is attached for your review, but here is the abbreviated version of what we are asking for:
- Commitment to a 2-year term, renewable if desired.
- Participation in two online training modules (and earn free CME credit!) - Oral Health Risk Assessment, See: http://www.aap.org/oralhealth/ohra-cme.cfm; Protecting All Children's Teeth, See: http://www.aap.org/oralhealth/pact.cfm.
- Attendance at the Chapter Advocate Training on Oral Health (CATOOH) in Elk Grove Village, IL, on November 5-6, 2010. You will earn CME credit, and all expenses are paid by AAP.
- Facilitation of at least 4 trainings per year. These could be in the office of a fellow pediatrician, family physician, or general dentist; chapter meeting; hospital grand rounds; etc. Limited expense reimbursement may be available through the AAP Oral Health Initiative; however, most COHAs find that their chapters or the host facility will cover these costs.
- Listed on the Indiana page of the AAP Oral Health Initiative website as the Chapter Oral Health Advocate - name and email, in case someone is looking for a contact related to oral health in your region. See: http://www.aap.org/oralhealth/state-IN.cfm
Please let us know by October 8th if you would be willing to attend the training and serve in this position. Contact Carolyn Downing: cdowning@ismanet.org
The Indiana State Department of Health has contracted the Center for Health Policy and Indiana University School of Dentistry to implement a one-year project to develop a strategic oral health plan. This plan will provide recommendations and strategies to improve accessibility of the oral health workforce for the underserved statewide. To coordinate the individual steps of the project, assist in the development of the strategic plan, and conduct the progress evaluation, a Coordinating Committee was established consisting of designated staff from the Indiana State Department of Health, Indiana University School of Dentistry, Center for Health Policy, and the Indiana Dental Association. The Committee is responsible for setting up a Statewide Planning Council (SPC); conducting a statewide oral health needs assessment; identifying priority needs; and developing a strategic oral health plan. The Coordinating Committee will convene on a regular basis.
