There is a bill being voted in the Senate on November 29th that would ban all earmarks in 2011, 2012 and 2013. This ban would wipe out funding for both Reach Out and Read and Reading Is Fundamental. It is crucial that we let our 2 Senators know how this ban would impact the 161,000 children that Reach Out and Read Indiana serves. I have attached a document with the phone number and email for the Education Legislative aide for both Lugar and Bayh. Under this information is the script for the phone call. I have also attached a follow up email and letter from all of the national programs impacted by this ban (also includes Teach For America and many others). Please take the time today to call both Senate offices and speak with the Aide and then follow up with an email. Please let me know what results you have and forward this to anyone you think would take a minute to call. This is very time sensitive since we have a holiday between now and the 29th. Thanks so much for all of your help and support./

As you know, Leyendo Juntos is Reach Out and Read's initiative designed to assist primary care providers in effectively encouraging Latino parents and extended family members to read with their children, through:
· Emphasizing respect for patients' cultures and primary language,
· Building upon the best practices of medical providers at various levels of linguistic proficiency, and
· Stressing the links between reading together and children's development and future school success.
We are now offering provider training for Leyendo Juntos, designed to help medical providers who serve Latino families. The training will be presented via Webinar by Dr. Mariana Glusman (Chairperson of the Leyendo Juntos National Advisory Committee, Reach Out and Read Illinois Medical Director, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL).This training (1hr in length) will be offered on a regular basis with the next trainings scheduled for:
Friday, November 19 at 12pm Eastern Time
Friday, January 21 at 2pm Eastern Time
Wednesday, March 9 at 12pm Eastern Time
Studies show that early literacy is a key indicator of a child’s future success. Fostering a love of literature through daily reading plays an important role in reaching that goal.

Reach Out and Read Indiana is a simple clinic-based intervention serving children ages six months to five years and integrates the love of books and literacy development into regularly scheduled well-child visits with pediatricians. PEDIATRICIANS can have volunteer readers in the clinic waiting room, can counsel parents about the importance of reading with young children, and can give the child an appropriate book to take home.
The Mission, simply stated, is to make the promotion of children's literacy development a standard part of pediatric care through anticipatory guidance and giving out age-appropriate books.
This is a statewide initiative that is the result of collaboration between the Indiana Chapter of AAP, MDwise, the Indiana Literacy Foundation and Riley Children's Foundation. Currently there are 34 sites across the state giving out over 78,000 new books.
