Frequently Asked Questions

As an active CEASE clinic, you may encounter common questions from staff or families as you continue to implement the program. Our FAQ section is designed with you in mind addressing common topics. These answers provide quick guidance and practical solutions to help your clinic stay confident and consistent in implementing the CEASE program.

Common Questions

Our clinic is seeing pushback from families and it is harder to screen, how do we prompt families to take the CEASE screener?

  • We hear this question often as there are many important initiatives in a clinic that need to be asked. It is also common for families to feel hesitant at first when being asked about tobacco use. To make screening easier we suggest:

    • Present the screener as a part of routine care and that the provider has requested families to take it to better support their patient population.

    • Keep it brief and simple as families are more likely to take it if they know it isn't very time consuming.

How do we obtain MOC credits for participating in the CEASE program?

  • CEASE qualifies for 50 MOC IV credits as it is a quality improvement program. To receive credit as a provider:

    • You will need 3 months of disease registry reports which are sent out to clinics each month. Please submit those reports at this secure link to receive credit; MOC Credit Link.

Our clinic is finding it challenging to consistently screen for CEASE, what should we do?

  • Many clinics find it difficult to screen at certain times or during sick season. A few strategies that can help include:

    • Have one person quickly go through the schedule in the morning and pick out a couple families that will be in for a quick visit. Try to screen these families as they are already going to be in the clinic for a short amount of time.

    • Screen for well child visits to get back into the groove of screening regularly.

    • Place the screener where it most naturally fits into your clinic flow whether that be at the front desk, intake, or in the exam room.

    • Share progress data with your staff so they are aware of the positive impact that they are making.

As a provider, how should I approach prescribing Nicotine Replacement Therapy through the CEASE program?

  • CEASE supports providers in offering evidence based treatment like NRT to parents and caregivers who use tobacco. Here are some keypoints to remember while prescribing NRT:

    • NRT is safe and effective for those who want to quit tobacco.

    • CEASE is a quality improvement program which allows providers to prescribe NRT to parents/caregivers that are not their patients. Furthermore there is also a standing order in the state of Indiana for NRT prescriptions at pharmacies.

    • NRT is available over the counter but as a provider if you write a prescription they can use their health insurance or HSA to get it at a reduced cost.
