A federal judge has ordered the restoration of nearly $12 million in federal grants to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), reversing recent funding cuts that supported rural health care initiatives and early identification of disabilities in young children. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell issued a preliminary injunction, finding that the Department of Health and Human Services likely acted with a retaliatory motive when it terminated the grants in December. The court concluded that AAP would face irreparable harm without the funding and that the public interest is best served by allowing these child health programs to continue while the case moves forward.
In her ruling, Judge Howell cited evidence of “clear animus” toward AAP, including critical statements from HHS officials related to the organization’s support of childhood vaccinations and gender-affirming care. The injunction restores the funding and blocks the cuts from taking effect during the ongoing legal proceedings, ensuring continued support for programs that promote and protect child health nationwide.
